Welcome to Empathy 2.0 — this article will go through the upgraded version of Empathy and how it can have a significant (yet, very invisible) impact on your professional success and growth. Let us start from Empathy 1.0. The definition, according to wikipedia, is “Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another being (a human or non-human animal) is experiencing from within the other being’s frame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in another’s position.”

Empathy is a great skill-set to develop over time. It helps keep our interactions with other beings more human and one ends up getting a lot of respect and admiration for the skill. Empathy has had great interest and is evident seeing the following couple of stats:

Interest over time
Regional interest

Note: The interest over time represent search interest relative to the highest point on the chart. If, at most ,10% of searches for the given region and time frame were for “pizza,” we’d consider this 100. This doesn’t convey absolute search volumes.

There are three quotes about empathy which beautifully describes the core fundamentals of empathy:

The transition from an inside-out thinking to outside-in thinking takes the base of empathy and builds on top of it. It is practical application of empathy in corporate situations — ensuring that the overall good of the team/ project/ organisation impacts the individual rather than the other way around.
